Pet Reptile Species (14)
With reptiles, the centre of care is not the relationship you build with the animal but the environment you build for it. A reptile depends on external temperature: a wrong heat gradient or missing UVB lighting directly disrupts digestion and bone development. "Needs little attention" is true; "needs little equipment" is not.
Heat gradient and UVB
The terrarium should not be a single temperature; the animal needs to regulate its own body heat by moving between a warm and a cool zone. UVB lighting is mandatory for most diurnal lizards — without it they develop metabolic bone disease, which is difficult to reverse. Species pages give temperature ranges and lighting needs separately.
Species suited to beginners
Leopard geckos and bearded dragons are considered entry species because their requirements are relatively forgiving and they tolerate handling well. Green iguanas and several python species belong with experienced keepers because of their adult size, power and long lives — taken on as a first reptile, most end up needing rehoming within a few years.
Lifespan and legal status
Some tortoise species live beyond 50 years and outlive their owners. The trade and keeping of certain species is also restricted under CITES and national law. Before acquiring one, verify the species’ legal status and the seller’s paperwork.
