Small Pets: Rodents and Rabbits (25)

Small pets are routinely recommended as an easy first animal for children, yet the differences between them are large. A Syrian hamster must live alone and is nocturnal — it is asleep at exactly the hour a child gets home from school. Guinea pigs are herd animals, and keeping one on its own is considered a welfare problem in several countries.

Alone or in pairs?

This varies by species and is not negotiable. Syrian hamsters attack their own kind as adults and must live alone. Dwarf hamsters can be kept in pairs under the right conditions. Guinea pigs, gerbils and rabbits are social species; kept alone they show stress, loss of appetite and behavioural problems. Every species page states this explicitly.

Life expectancy and children

Hamsters live 2-3 years on average. Rabbits reach 8-12 years and chinchillas 15-20. That commitment outlasts most children’s attention span, and it is the main reason rabbits are so heavily represented in rescue shelters. Before adopting, make it clear that the adult is ultimately responsible for the animal’s care.

Common feeding mistakes

The foundation of a rabbit’s or guinea pig’s diet is not pellets but unlimited hay. Guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C themselves and develop scurvy without a dietary source. Details like these are why "small animal equals simple care" is the wrong assumption.
